Dr. Karetzky appears as part of UTC “Focus on China” events sponsored by the UTC College of Arts and Sciences.
This exhibition includes sculpture, painting, photography, digital and video art created by a selection of some of China’s most recognized artists working today. Munsterberg Chair of Asian Art, Bard College, NY; and Professor of Art History, Lehman College, NYC; with curatorial assistance from Ruth Grover, Director and Curator, UTC Cress Gallery of Art, Chattanooga, TN.
“After the Cultural Revolution which was soon followed by the death of Mao, China entered a new age of artistic creativity. For the first time artists were able to explore a variety of subjects in a number of media. At first their art reacted to the constrictions of the long years of cultural repression, but then artists looked to the previously forbidden art of the west to find currents of modern art. Now, several decades later, artists seek to incorporate Chinese cultural and social values in their art. Thus, the artists in this exhibition individually address the varied issues of their artistic, social and political milieu and explore the international problems of our global society.”Dr. Patricia Eichenbaum Karetsky
This exhibition, supported by the UTC Friends of the Gallery, coincides with Focus on China presentations organized by the UTC College of Arts and Sciences, November 4 – November 18, 2010; and runs concurrently with an exhibition of the work of photographers from Wuxi, China, in the UTC University Center, November 2 – November 29, 2010, organized by Sister Cities of Chattanooga and Allied Arts of Greater Chattanooga.
Cress Gallery hours: 9:30am – 7:30pm Monday – Friday; 1:00pm – 4:00pm Sat & Sun.
